Water Infusions 101

A few summers ago, I was offered a gorgeous, ice-cold glass of cucumber-infused water. It was surprisingly refreshing--the flavors present, yet subtle. I helped myself to another glass. A short while later, I had one more. I went home, did some research, found a perfect sized glass decanter, and began tinkering with my own infusions. I now try to keep a pitcher of infused water in my refrigerator whenever possible, but especially during the summer months when  the body needs an ample supply of water to function properly and to avoid dehydration.

I love infused water for the taste, of course, but I also love it for the beauty: there is something so lovely, so luxurious, so romantic about herbs and fruits and flowers floating in a glass decanter of water.  It makes me want to drink water, why I even look forward to drinking water. Getting my several glasses in a day is a snap and it never gets old as the flavor combinations are endless.

I prefer to scavenge for ingredients around the garden, so generally my water infusions will contain any combination of herbs, citrus slices, and edible flowers that are seasonally available and easily gathered.  Some of my favorite infusions are lavender with blood orange; tangerine with rose petals; cucumber with sage; lemon verbena with mint; and lemon with nasturtium petals. Other ingredients that work well include grapefruit, kiwi, frozen berries, apples, melons, tropical fruits, and whatever else sounds interesting and, of course, pleasing to the senses. 

Whatever ingredients you decide upon, a little goes a long way. I place 1-2 bunches of herbs and/or 1-2 citrus fruits sliced along with a few handfuls of flower petals into a 2-gallon glass decanter full of cold, purified water.  You can remove the ingredients after a few hours and store just the infused water; or, if you are like me and too attached to the sight of lovely things floating in your water, leave it in, but drink it within a few days. Either way, store the infusion in the fridge to keep it from fermenting.

Water infusions are now my stand-by beverage of choice for all of our social gatherings. So long are the days of the ice tub packed with individual servings of drinks in glass or plastic containers. Now we keep a large, ice-laden, glass decanter full of infused water next to several other jugs of various homemade concoctions. Clean-up is a breeze, the cost is next to nothing, and most importantly, it's pleasing to the planet.
